Psychedelic Sitters School
The Medicinal Mindfulness Psychedelic Training Program Established 2012
The Medicinal Mindfulness Psychedelic Training program began in 2012 as a local Psychedelic Harm Reduction and Integration Support training program. Since the legalization of cannabis in 2014, we’ve transitioned the first training to a retreat event with facilitated psychedelic experiences. We have students from all over the United States and Canada come to the retreats and to enjoy the beautiful State of Colorado. We provide automatic scholarship rates to students and veterans, and have need-based scholarships available as well.
In some psychedelic communities, a “sitter” is someone who facilitates a psychedelic experience or helps hold space for another. In other psychedelic communities, it is the “sitter” who has the psychedelic experience. Therefore, Psychedelic Sitters School has a double meaning, in that our Psychedelic Training Program teaches both mindfulness bases psychedelic journeywork practices for safe psychonauting, as well as practices on holding space and guiding others. Teaching safety and good boundaries are our highest priority.
We teach from a multi-paradigm, transpersonal, holistic approach that incorporates the four primary paradigms of psychedelic medicine use: Clinical, Spiritual, Creative and Research Exploration. We also add an additional dimension of “Skill Sets” to the classic paradigm of “Set & Setting” to promote skill and psychedelic resilience development. If we were to build further with the “S’s” of Set, Setting & Skill, we’d probably add “Substance Education" and “Support/Integration” to describe important themes of the program.
Through our Psychedelic Therapy Training program, you’ll gain everything you need to safely start the practice of integrating psychedelics into a functional healing modality. The program is designed to benefit new and experienced psychedelic facilitators. While Psychedelic Sitters School is clinically and medically informed, we incorporate perspectives that are more in alignment with traditional psychedelic healing modalities, something we call “Psychedelic Therapy” as an umbrella perspective that includes but isn’t limited to “Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy.”

+ Level 1: Psychedelic Sitters SchooL
Psychedelic Sitters School includes a 5-part webinar instruction before attending so students are ready to participate in a 5-day experiential training retreat. The retreat includes at least one intentional psychedelic experience each day, including Conscious Cannabis Circle, Cannabis Healing Meditations, Community Breathwork, Cannabis-Assisted Breathwork, and participant guided individual sessions. You’ll learn how to make your own psychedelic cannabis blends, setup and safely hold space as a psychedelic sitter. This training is moving to a retreat format in 2019 so we’ll have a lot of time to add additional experiences, including yoga and sound healing sessions. PSS is a prerequisite to assist at our local community events and a prerequisite for Psychedelic Guide Training.
+ Level 2: Psychedelic Guide Training
Psychedelic Guide Training is a full four day professional training program designed to teach our students everything they need to know to begin facilitating individual psychedelic cannabis session in a professional setting. The training builds on skill sets developed from Psychedelic Sitters School and teaches participants how to deepen a clients process safely. This training is a prerequisite to our assistant facilitators and apprenticeship program.
+ Psychedelic First Aid/CPR Certification
New to 2019, this standalone 3-day program is designed to cover all of the mental health crises, medical emergencies, worst case scenarios, and physical safety requirements all psychedelic facilitators need to know how to handle. The program is a combination of mental health first aid and crisis intervention and wilderness first responders training, specifically focusing on crises sometimes caused by psychedelics and other drugs, including overdoses. The training will include a Conscious Cannabis Circle for trainees, and a two-year CPR/First Aid Certification.
+ 2nd Annual DMTx Psychonaut Training Retreat
Also known as Psychedelic Boot Camp, this is our 2nd Annual, 5-day, 14 hours a day, psychedelic intensive training program designed to prepare psychonauts who wish to experience Extended-State DMT journeys through our DMTx Program.
+ Certificates of Completion and Certification
Participants that complete the training will receive certificates of completion. Level 1 Psychedelic Sitters School is a prerequisite for other trainings as well as our sitter and facilitator certification program. Medicinal Mindfulness is offering one certification beginning in 2019: Certified Psychedelic Sitter (CPS). The CPS certifies that you have a certain amount of sitter training and agree to important code of ethics requirements.
+ Additional Trainings Beginning in 2020
- Conscious Cannabis & Breathwork Group Facilitation
- Higher-BreathTM: Cannabis-Assisted Breathwork Facilitation
- Cannabis-Assisted PTSD Healing Protocol
+ Medicinal Mindfulness Facilitators & Apprenticeship Program
Local graduates of Psychedelic Sitters School have the opportunity to assist at any of our local community events. At these events, the “sitters” learn different roles required to facilitate the experiences. Out of town students can gain similar experiences by sponsoring private events. Those who are ready are invited to step into bigger leadership and facilitator roles.
Participants in the program will have opportunities to receive support through a private online forum and other community events.

+ Substance Use Policy
Medicinal Mindfulness takes community and psychedelic safety very seriously. MM only provides cannabis services and only in legal settings. Our intention is to step into working with other psychedelic medicines only when it is legal to do so. Community sustainability is our highest priority. We do not work with or provide illegal substances. As a harm reduction program, we support members and clients who choose to personally use illicit substances through education and psychological support services. What you do in your own home and on your own time is generally none of our business as long as you are not harming yourself or others.
Please note, our cannabis-related programs are not designed to support other psychedelic substance use safely, nor would it be legal for us to do so. Please support the success of our program and the psychedelic legalization movement by respecting our boundaries around illicit substance use.
Bringing or consuming illicit substances and/or alcohol is expressly forbidden before, during, after, or around any Medicinal Mindfulness event, session, program, or training retreat.
The use, misuse, or overuse of pharmaceuticals, supplements, tobacco products outside a religious settings, and other substances that may interfere with the safe use of cannabis or breathwork practices is also expressly forbidden.
Cannabis use is only allowed in designated areas or at designated times at specified events, sessions or training retreats.
A designated driver after imbibing cannabis is always required until the next day after use.
Using, bringing, and/or offering an illicit substance to another participant at any of our events is considered a form of harassment. For safety reasons, participants are encouraged to speak to an MM facilitator if they see or hear anything related to inappropriate substance use.
Medicinal Mindfulness facilitators are trained to tell the difference between illicit substance use and mental health emergencies. Participants who use or bring any illicit substance to an MM event will be immediately assessed for safety and then either asked to leave or provided a taxi service, at their expense, if intoxicated. Participants asked to leave will be liable for any costs associated with disrupting any of our programs or events. No refunds will be issued to a participant asked to leave.
Clients seeking MM services for addiction treatment are required to speak to an MM representative before attending any of our events. While there is significant evidence that cannabis and other psychedelics can be used to treat addiction safely and effectively, treating addiction requires a specific and very structured protocol to ensure the safety of clients and our community. Participating in our services requires a commitment to abstinence, the ongoing support of a certified addictions counselor, and an openness to receiving feedback when addictive traits or behaviors are witnessed. Medicinal Mindfulness can refer clients to psychedelic-friendly addictions counselors for additional support.
Please review the information provided in the FAQ and if you have any questions regarding our services please contact us. Our work is not for everyone, primarily because we are conditional advocates for intentional, sacred and non-habitual use of cannabis and other psychedelics. If this is a major concern, our services might not be the right fit for you and that is okay. We love you anyway. For those who are on the fence, please start a conversation with us. This FAQ covers some of our most common questions we’re asked.
+ So...will you facilitate a MDMA or Psilocybin session for me?
This is our most common question, especially since Michael Pollan’s book “How to change your Mind” came out. We're really sorry. We wish we could, and Medicinal Mindfulness will be one of the very first organizations in the country to offer these medicines when it is legal to do so. There’s no test, no inner circle, no secret groups to join. Everything we offer is listed on our website. But then we’re also sometimes asked, “What if I provided the medicine?” Sorry, still no.“ Do you know someone who could?” Sorry, no.
We really love working with cannabis and we’d love to show you that it can be used in the same way as these other medicines can, but it’s really okay if you don’t believe us. We will say that all of our services are designed to support our clients in stepping into psychedelic journeywork, whether for deep healing or just good ol’ fashioned curiosity, without anyone having to break any laws. We’re already living in the future that so many people are fighting and working hard for. We’d love to share it with you.
+ But seriously, cannabis can't do what you are claiming...right?
This is our second most common question. The answer is pretty simple. We stumbled upon one of the biggest secrets in the psychedelic community, one that very few people know about. Maybe we just collectively forgot how to use cannabis skillfully. Cannabis is a classic psychedelic. We have a lot of experience to back that claim up.
Most people associate psychedelic cannabis trips with eating too many edibles and getting sick, having panic attacks, and tripping really, really hard. Afterwards they rightly think, why in the world would I do that again? But this common experience proves, even if it was a “bad trip,” that it was a “trip” nonetheless. If you’re new to the psychedelic paradigm, it really makes some sense to test the waters a bit before flying to Peru for your first ever Ayahuasca experience. If you’re an experienced psychonaut, come try something new. If you’re concerned it won’t be strong enough, I’ll offer you a second pipe… and a third. Let’s see how far we can take it. Cannabis is one of the safest substances on the planet.
A few things I can say are this: most skeptics come out of the experience completely surprised by the intensity of the trip, sometimes even veteran psychonauts say it was the most intense psychedelic trip they have ever had. Ayahuasca practitioners and DMT folks regularly say it was just like Ayahuasca and DMT. From my experience, I will say that it seems like it starts like an MDMA experience, then it morphs into a psilocybin experience. A very significant number also state they experience Ayahuasca level and DMT level trips, especially if we add certain breathwork practices. I am becoming more and more convinced that cannabis used skillfully may be as effective as MDMA in treating PTSD, just from my personal observations of both. Personally, I have had psychedelic cannabis experiences that were indistinguishable from MDMA, psilocybin, LSD, peyote, ayahuasca, N,N-DMT, and even 5-meo-DMT. Cannabis is a shapeshifter medicine as much as anything else. The primary difference is that journeyers keep their agency, they can navigate the experience more skillfully, and with greater ease, and they can pause the experience if they need to if it gets overwhelming. And there’s way less vomiting involved. We have a lot to learn from this humble medicine.
The pot most of us are familiar with is just not the cannabis we have available now. I remember a time when there were two kinds of cannabis, weed and later on, “kind bud." It is hard to describe the magical potency and variety of cannabis strains that we now take for granted in Colorado. This program was developed because we had access to the cleanest, best cannabis ever grown. Again, we’d love to share it with you.
It’s going to be figured out eventually. People are already starting to propose studies on cannabis as a psychedelic and as a trauma healing modality. I just don’t think I could have made it 5 years now being a full time professional Cannabis-Assisted Psychedelic Therapist if I were just getting people high. I know it sounds hard to believe… that’s ok… I’m used to it. Come to Boulder and I can show you.
+ I don't like how pot makes me feel, how is this different?
We'd ask more details about how cannabis makes you feel and about the context of your use. Usually people smoke pot recreationally and in group settings, which sometimes elicits social anxiety and other negative side effects. I generally explore specific concerns but remind potential clients that this is more akin to an intentional psychedelic experience, rather than smoking pot with your friends. It’s important to consider the possibility that the experience will be radically different than previous cannabis experiences.
+ What is Psychedelic Harm Reduction and Harm Prevention?
As a Psychedelic Harm Reduction & Prevention program at its foundation, the information, individual services, training programs, and events of Medicinal Mindfulness are designed to address the full spectrum of complex experiences associated with psychedelic medicine and cannabis use. Some behaviors and decisions are inherently risky, especially skydiving, transformation and awakening. We require that everyone we work with takes full responsibility for all outcomes of their journey as part of their experience with us. It has been our experience that this degree of personal responsibly is a required preliminary mind set for individuals to stay as safe as possible on their journey. With that being said, our number one priority is your safety.
Medicinal Mindfulness is a "Harm Reduction" drug education and support program, specifically for psychedelic medicine and cannabis users. We believe objective education and nonjudgmental support services are the most effective strategies in working with our communities. According to the Harm Reduction Coalition:
Harm reduction is a set of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use. Harm Reduction is also a movement for social justice built on a belief in, and respect for, the rights of people who use drugs. Harm reduction incorporates a spectrum of strategies from safer use, to managed use to abstinence to meet drug users “where they’re at,” addressing conditions of use along with the use itself. Because harm reduction demands that interventions and policies designed to serve drug users reflect specific individual and community needs, there is no universal definition of or formula for implementing harm reduction.
Psychedelic Harm Prevention takes this paradigm a step further. Saying “harm reduction” implies inherent harms, where as we believe that when used skillfully and intentionally, cannabis and other psychedelics can be used to heal and make our lives better. With that being said, risks are real, so we address them head-on.
+ WHAT IS THE LEGALITY OF THE SERVICES MEDICINAL MINDFULNESS PROVIDES?
The short answer is that what we do is completely legal. Federal cannabis possession laws only apply to federal lands and military bases and such. In Colorado, the consumption of cannabis and its possession is legal but well regulated. We just use the recreational cannabis laws in a new and unexpected “set and setting.”
The use of cannabis is an optional, but integral, component of our Conscious Cannabis Experiences. Participants are required to bring their own cannabis to these sessions. Less than 1 gram is usually required, which is far less than the legal private consumption limit of one ounce for Colorado residents, and 7 grams for Colorado visitors. Participants must be 21 years old or older to attend these events. A valid ID is required to determine age. These services and events do not include the sale of cannabis or cannabis products. Cannabis is not a business expense and there are no financial transactions related to this medicine in any way.
Sessions and events where cannabis is consumed are private, invitation only, and comply with all applicable Colorado laws. Participants understand that the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that employers have the right to fire employees for cannabis use, even if used responsibly and off hours, and participants assume all risks associated with this as well.
According to the Colorado NORML publication, The Responsible Consumer’s Guide to Marijuana in Colorado, “Private vs. Public: The Colorado constitution, protects private marijuana use, so you can consume openly at a residence or outdoors on a porch or balcony as long as the property owner allows it. Marijuana cannot be consumed openly and publicly, such as on streets and sidewalks, or in public parks. Localities may have their own regulations on where you can consume, so you should check local laws first.”

+ Is this confidential?
Medicinal Mindfulness adheres to strict confidentiality guidelines in our work with our clients, and all information provided to us, written and verbal, as well as your identity, will remain confidential, except when exclusions are required by law, such as if there is intent to hurt oneself or another, or child or elder abuse is occurring. Many of our practitioners are helping professionals and are therefore mandatory reporters under Colorado law. While we require that all participants agree to keep confidential the experience and identity of other participants, due to the community nature of some of our events, we cannot make any guarantees of confidentiality. Although in 5 years, nothing like that has ever happened. Participants who have strong confidentiality requirements are encouraged to schedule individual sessions or sponsor a group with only trusted friends and allies. Credit card statements will say “Medicinal Mindfulness LLC or MM Events LLC” on services provided.
+ Where are the sessions located?
Sessions where cannabis is consumed by a client are only available in the client’s home or in locations that allow private cannabis use. We have several locations set up for these services and the address is provided to our clients. Sessions where cannabis is consumed are NOT facilitated in the Medicinal Mindfulness main office. Participants are not allowed to drive after their experience until the following day. A shuttle/taxi service or registered designated driver is required to fully participate in these experiences. Personal spaces, homes and rentals must be pre-approved, private (evocative music can be loud at times), clean and comfortable. Fireside sessions must be on private land and comply with all applicable fire regulations.
+ Additional Legal Information. . .
We do not encourage any illegal activities or the use or abuse of cannabis or any other medicine. Nor do we believe that cannabis or other medicine exploration, even within the confines of applicable laws, is appropriate or beneficial for everyone. We are conditional advocates for intentional, sacred and non-habitual cannabis use. A substantial amount of skill development, the right mindset, and an intentional setting are required to minimize the risks involved in the exploration of powerful medicines. Our work is, at its foundation, a harm reduction program.
